The Coronavirus pandemic has desolated the global tourism industry. The UN chief said that the global tourism industry has lost approximately $320 billion in export in the first five months of the year and more than 120 million jobs at high risk.
- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, the tourism industry is the third-largest export sector of the global economy, behind fuels and chemicals, it accounted for 7% of total global trade in 2019.
- In terms of employment, it employs one people in every ten and provides livelihoods to more than 100 millions people.
- Due to COVID-19, the international tourist arrivals decreases by more than half and earnings also plummeted in the first five months of 2020.
- The loss of the first five months of 2020 was $320 billion in lost export which is three times to the loss of the last global financial crisis of 2009.
